  • Silas is 7

Silas is officially 7!  How that happened so fast, I have no idea.  Check out the September 2009 album for some photos of his birthday party at Hanbat Arboretum last weekend, popcorn cake at school today with his class, and then presents at home.  John  has been putting stickers on GI Joe toys for the last hour...at least he doesn't have to put them together too.  Sara was excited that Silas got the good girl GI Joe too.  Usually they play Polly Pocket...now they'll have a pretend world of Polly Pocket and GI Joe.

  • Quarantined

We made it back to Korea uneventfully, unpacked from the summer, reorganized our new apartment, and settled into a new routine at school...and then we got an unexpected "vacation." After two weeks back in Korea and the first full week of school with students John came down with H1N1 flu.  He is almost completely better now and the rest of us stayed healthy so we are very thankful.  He wasn't the only one in our school sick though so TCIS closed for 7 days and we're not supposed to be social at all during the break. Don't tell the nurse but the kids and I have  had to sneak out for walks to keep our sanity...staying away from people but getting a break from our walls.  We've had fun playing hide and seek tag and Silas's has even taken up jogging  a few miles with me.
School was going well though. The kids are all excited to be back and in the school routine again.  Nina and I are enjoying our half days and I'm enjoying my new position.  I'm only working part time this year and helping the Director of Technology/Director of School Improvement in kind of an administrative assistant type position.  It's very different from the Early Learning Center but I think it is a break that will refresh me.  I'm learning lots about new school technology and spending a lot of time with my computer.  At the end of the morning though I am ready to be with people and that is a welcome change to my mindset last year.  We are excited to start having church at our house again and to have students over regularly as soon as school resumes...this was something we just couldn't do last year but it was a priority in getting this part time position for me.  We are thankful for the opportunity to do it again without overstretching our family time and needs.
This coming weekend we're going down to Kyeongju on the western coast for the annual staff retreat.  We miss the beach already and are hoping for at least a walk on a beach an hour or so from the hotel.  It's always an adventure about what we'll actually find. It's always a great time to just reconnect with everyone here after our summer away.
No photos but it would a great one if we had some...we order our drinking water in 5 gallon bottles, 4 bottles at time.  Unfortunately, we ordered it to the wrong apt having transposed our new apartment number on the order form.  When it didn't arrive I called to check on it and we realized our mistake. So we had a family adventure rolling those heavy bottles across a few parking lots...the kids had so much fun they asked if we could do it again the next day....thankfully it wasn't necessary!

  • Summer

We had an amazing summer....the best ever as Silas says.  I asked, "what about New Zealand?" He says that was great too but different.  I asked him why it was such a good summer and he listed all of the wildlife we've seen right down to the toads he collected on a visit to our friends the Vinson's in Havana, FL.  For having lived in a city for so many years they are definitely still outdoor explorers...I am so glad!
We started our summer travels with a week on Oahu (the best long layover on a plane trip ever!) exploring the island but mostly relaxing and snorkeling on the beaches off of the north shore just as a family. It was a really wonderful time to reconnect as a family after our busy spring and have adventures together. Sara was enticed by the sea turtles and loved snorkeling.  Nina decided she loves the ocean.  As soon as we arrived at our condo she ran out fully clothed as far as she could go into the water.  She was braver than we were ready for.  Silas wasn't quite so brave at the beginning but he is swimming like a fish now too and even learned to do a cannon ball into the pool.

After Oahu we came to Florida and unpacked our furniture from the U-Haul into our newly purchased townhouse. Whit was wonderful and drove the UHaul down with everything we've been storing in Tallhassee before we arrived.  He had some help from Brandon loading the UHaul in Tallahassee and we were very thankful to not have to make that trip ourselves. It was a blessing.  So we unpacked and have enjoyed being at home in the midst of all our travels. It's so much more restful than house hopping.
John and I spent 6 days in the Turks and Caicos together celebrating our 10th anniversary while the kids stayed home with Grandma (John's mom). They all had fun and we were very thankful to have that time together.
We've also spent lots of time with extended family, enjoyed reconnecting with dear friends, stocked up for Korea, and had lots of doctor checkups.  While we are definitely mentally refreshed we will have to go back to Korea to rest I think.  We're hoping for one more day at the beach and then it's back to the land of the morning calm on Thursday...during the morning calm...3:30 am to be exact...I'll have to think that through better when I book tickets for next summer.
Check out the album for some photos of our summer.

  • Sara's Birthday Party

Sara's birthday is June 11th which is usually during our summer travels.  So we celebrated a little early with a tea party at our house and her friends from school.  There were the five girls from her class and the other faculty children from fourth grade.  They dressed up, we played charades, had tea cup races, and of course had tea and fancy treats.  The girls all had fun.  Jonathan and Jamie Lee came over to play with Silas and Nina at the same time.  Jamie and Nina had their own tea party in her room. Silas and Jonathan wore their suits to greet the guests and escort them up the elevator. Then they quickly changed clothes and resumed more boy-like activities.  Check out the photos.

  • Spring Break Adventures

We've been back at school for two weeks already but we had a very mentally refreshing although very physically active Spring Break this year. We stayed in Daejeon but did lots of day trips.  We went swimming at the indoor pool, hiked on the mountain in search of cherry blossoms, played and rowed at the lake, bicycled in Songnisan, and walked around the Hwasong Fortress in Suwon.  We had lots of adventures.  We were a few days too early for the cherry blossoms on the mountain but we saw tadpoles, people picking wild herbs, and discovered that our trail through the woods has been de-wooded...so sad.
We went to the lake with Grant Dewey and his boys. We took two inflateable boats to paddle, the kids covered themselves completely in mud, made sand castles, laid in the sun, and then got chased away at the end of the day by a police boat.  Apparently you have to have a permit to "boat" on the lake.  Oops!  It was lots of fun though.  I wish I had pictures of Sara sitting in her mud puddle.
John and I went on a date to bicycle at Songnisan...it was about 35 miles around the park and mostly around the mountains...it was great to be out together but John's version of "flat" is different than mine:)  He had to do a lot of coaching those last 5 miles!
We all took the train for a day trip to explore the Hwasong Fortress in Suwon.  It was built in 1750 but has been restored. It's 5K around but we walked for 3 hours and didn't finish...it's our mini version of the Great Wall of China. The modern day city of Suwon has grown up both inside and outside of the fortress walls.  The kids had lots of fun looking for the names of the people who made the original bricks although I'm not sure we ever found any...just graffiti I think.
The next few weeks are full of end of the year activities at school.  We have 6 more weeks before our summer vacation begins.   The days will be so full I'm sure they will fly by faster than even we would like:)
Check out the Spring Break album for more photos.
